To be clear about where this is
fastsite is not a SaaS product today. There is nothing to buy, no trial to start, and no account to create on this site. If you want to use it right now, you install it yourself.
Why free
The engine was built to solve its author's own problem, and the cost of letting other people run it is close to zero. Charging for the self-hosted version would mostly buy the ability to say no to people — which is not a feature worth having.
The cloud version will be paid, because servers cost money and someone has to be on call for them. That is the only thing it will charge for: the operating, not the software.
What will never be charged for
- Seats. Per-login pricing forces teams to ration access to their own tools. It will not appear here.
- Sites. Run one or two hundred. The engine does not count them.
- The API or MCP. They are the product, not an enterprise upsell.
- Reading your own data. Export is not a paid tier.
Questions
Can I use it commercially?
Yes. Run it for your own business, for clients, for an agency's entire portfolio. The GPL places no restriction on use, only on redistribution of modified copies of the engine itself. See open source.
What does it actually cost to run?
A small VPS and a domain. The engine is one container; the output is static files on a CDN, which most providers serve free at the volumes a normal site sees. The heavy work happens at build time on your own box.
Is there support?
Issues and discussion on GitHub. It is a one-person project — see the about page for what that does and does not get you.
When is the cloud version out?
No date. It will be announced on the blog when it is real rather than when it is planned.
What happens to self-hosting when cloud launches?
Nothing. The GPL version stays the complete engine. A hosted option that only works by making the free one worse is not a business model, it is a bait.
